Essentialism must perish!

It's surprising that such a powerful insight can come from a leading Ugandan poltician:
Mr Bahati, from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), said: "Here, we don't recognise homosexuality as a right. We are after the sin, not the sinners. We love them - and we want them to repent and come back. "It's not an inborn orientation, it's a behaviour learnt - and it can be unlearnt."

Europe: U.S., China too weak on climate goals

COPENHAGEN - As delegates worked long hours in search of a climate compromise by Thursday, the European Union on Tuesday added fuel to the diplomatic fire between China and the United States — saying that neither country's climate targets are aggressive enough.

Imperialism in 1900Isn't it great that we can impeach those ignorant natives once again?

Oh please, show me that map again, I was so close...*

*I 'm wondering what B.Anderson has to say about this

We are Europeans at last

Sovereign greek discourses are dominated for the last hundred years, or possibly more, by an Angst for modernization, by the cry for Greece to "at last become part of Europe, of the West".

It seems that this process, a declared goal of the whole of the political spectrum, is complete; or at least it's completion is just ahead of us.

For can it be otherwise, when the Home Secretary (Minister des Innern) twits his insights of the current situation many times per day? When he publishes himself photos of cops beating demonstrators, saying that they are transgressing the law and that he is saddened by it?

What's more, when he, exactly at the time when we all want to say "Putsch!"*, announces that every cop will have a number inscribed on their uniform, and that the use of tear gas is being discontinued?

Way to go PA.SO.K.! I for one, am speechless.

*according to most news agencies, these last three days something between 900 and 1.400 people were illicitly and "preventively" (there is no such provision in Greek Law) abducted by Greek police, many from their homes. If any right-wing administration had done such a thing, this blog along with many others would speak of a new dictatorship in Greece.
